A powerful state among the Gaya states of ancient Korea. Also known as Daegaya and Gaya. Centered in present-day Goryeong County, North Gyeongsang Province, the royal capital was Goryeong-eup, the mountain fortresses defending the capital were Jusan in the west and Mangsan in the east, and the Goryeong Tomb Group was located in Jisan-dong. There are two theories about its predecessor, the Kuya Kingdom and the Mioyama Kingdom, as described in the Byeonjin chapter of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. According to legend, the two sons of Jeonggeummoju, the mountain god of Mt. Gaya, founded this state and Gimhae Gaya. It was founded in 43 years, lasted for 520 years through 16 generations, and was annexed by Silla in 562. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
