Suitcase - Kouri

Japanese: 行李 - こうり
Suitcase - Kouri

A storage container woven from willow, bamboo, or rattan, it is a type of tsuzura basket. Depending on the material, it is called willow wicker, bamboo wicker, or rattan wicker. In addition to clothing containers, some are called lunch box wicker or pharmacy wicker. Small ones remain in the Shosoin Repository, but they became widespread after the Edo period. Most are rectangular with deep lids and were used to store clothing and other personal items while traveling or in daily life. Omi's Mizuguchi, Takamiya, and Hyuga are known for their rattan wicker, Yamashiro and Echizen for their bamboo ajiro wicker, and Tajima, Bitchu, and Bingo for their willow wicker. In China, government messengers are called wicker, and in Buddhism, the word "wicker" is written but read as "anri" and refers to training. In the Japanese military before World War II, the term referred to a baggage truck loaded with ammunition and equipment, and the units that carried it were also called luggage.
