The Tripitaka engraved and printed in Goryeo. The first carving of the Tripitaka was started in Goryeo during the time of the 8th king Hyeonjong (around 1020 or 1021), when he started collecting Buddhist scriptures for Hyeonhwasa Temple, which he built for the memorial of his parents. This project took many years and was completed in 1087 (during the time of the 13th king Seonjong). The woodblocks were kept at Buinsa Temple in Daegu, North Gyeongsang Province, but were all burned down in 1232 during the Mongol invasion of Goryeo, which had begun the previous year. The Choi clan, who were the de facto rulers of Goryeo at the time, sought to reprint the woodblocks of the Tripitaka in hopes of driving out the Mongols, and work began in 1236, completing it in 1251.
