Fragrance - Kouyaku

Japanese: 香薬 - こうやく

A general term for incense, spices, and medicines used in China and pre-Meiji Japan. Agarwood, benzoin, myrrh, and frankincense, which are extracted from plant resin, sandalwood, borneol, cinnamon, which is extracted from the bark and roots, cloves, which are extracted from the flowers, pepper, and nutmeg, which are extracted from the fruit, are found in Southeast Asia, Southwest China, India, East Africa, and Southwest Asia. Other incense sources include the secretions of sperm whales (ambergris), and the reproductive glands of musk deers and civet cats.

中国や明治前の日本などで，焚香（ふんこう）料，香辛料，薬物の総称。植物の樹脂からとれる沈香（じんこう），安息香，没薬（もつやく），乳香，材からとれる白檀（びやくだん），竜脳，皮や根からとれる肉桂，花からとれる丁香(クローブ)，果実からとれる胡椒，肉荳蔲（にくずく）は，東南アジア，西南中国，インドや東アフリカ，西南アジアに産し，ほかにマッコウクジラの分泌物(竜涎（りゆうぜん）香)，ジャコウジカ，ジャコウネコの生殖腺分泌物もあった。
