French human geographer. He was professor at the Collège de France in Paris, Hanoi, Brussels, and other universities. His academic career began with the study of the former French Indochina, and he published many books on Asia between 1930 and 1940. His major work, The Peasants of the Tonkin Delta (1936), which covered the entire Song Khoi River delta, made him famous worldwide. After World War II, he devoted himself to African studies, and his work was compiled into the book Africa (1970), which is said to represent the highest level of African geography.

フランスの人文地理学者。パリのコレージュ・ド・フランスやハノイ,ブリュッセル等の大学で教授を歴任した。彼の学問は,旧フランス領インドシナ研究から始まり,1930‐40年にかけてアジアに関する多くの著書を出版した。とりわけソンコイ川デルタ全域を扱った大著《トンキン・デルタの農民》(1936)は彼の名を世界的なものにした。第2次大戦後はアフリカ研究に打ち込み,その集約はアフリカ地誌の最高水準を示すといわれる《アフリカ》(1970)にまとめられた。
