1900‐1999 French human geographer. He was professor at the Collège de France in Paris, Hanoi, Brussels, and other universities. His academic career began with the study of the former French Indochina, and he published many books on Asia between 1930 and 1940. His major work, The Peasants of the Tonkin Delta (1936), which covered the entire Song Khoi River delta, made him famous worldwide. After World War II, he devoted himself to African studies, and his work was compiled into the book Africa (1970), which is said to represent the highest level of African geography.
