People's Republic (MRP)

One of the centrist parties in France. It was founded in 1944 by Christian (Catholic) democrats including G. Bidault, a member of the Resistance against the Nazis. In the first general election of the Constituent Assembly in 1945, it became the second largest party by collecting votes from conservatives, and was on a par with the Communist and Socialist parties. It then became the largest party in the general election of June 1946. It was a major party for the first year or two of the Constituent Assembly and the Fourth Republic, but when C. de Gaulle formed the French National Rally in 1947 and emerged as a clearly right-wing party, the conservatives lost their support and it fell to one of the centrist parties sandwiched between the left and right parties. In September 1967, the National Committee decided to change the party to the "Ideological Club" and the Christian Democracy Study Group, and it was effectively dissolved.
