Japanese: 硬水 - こうすい（英語表記）hard water

Natural water that contains relatively large amounts of calcium ions and magnesium ions is called hard water, while water that contains relatively small amounts is called soft water.

Temporary and permanent hard water

When hard water contains mainly bicarbonate ions, the cations can be precipitated as carbonates by boiling, making it soft, and it is called temporary hard water. When the anions are other than bicarbonate ions, such as chloride ions or sulfate ions, boiling does not make the water soft, and it is called permanent hard water. However, even permanent hard water can be softened by ion exchange or by creating a chelate with a chelating agent such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Hard water is unsuitable for domestic or industrial use because it precipitates when exposed to soap, hindering its function, and produces scale when heated in boilers, etc.

hardness

The degree of water hardness is called hardness, and is expressed by the calcium and magnesium content. In other words, the total amount of calcium and magnesium present in water is converted into the equivalent amount of calcium carbonate, and the hardness is expressed as the number of milligrams per 1000 milliliters. This is called American hardness (unit: ppm), and is widely used in Japan. When 100 milliliters of water contains 1 milligram of calcium oxide, it is considered to be German hardness 1 (unit: dH), and magnesium is converted into calcium oxide using 1.4MgO = 1.0CaO. Water with a hardness of 20 degrees or more is usually called hard water, water with a hardness of 10 degrees or less is called soft water, and water in between is called intermediate water. Hardness corresponding to the concentration of bicarbonate ions is called primary hardness or carbonate hardness, and hardness corresponding to the base of other strong acids is called permanent hardness or noncarbonate hardness.

一時硬水と永久硬水

硬水のうち、含まれている陰イオンが主として炭酸水素イオンであるような場合は、煮沸することによって陽イオンを炭酸塩として沈殿させることができ、したがって軟水とすることができるので、一時硬水という。陰イオンが炭酸水素イオン以外、すなわち塩化物イオン、硫酸イオンなどである場合には、煮沸しても軟水にはならないので永久硬水という。ただし永久硬水であってもイオン交換によって、あるいはエチレンジアミン四酢酸などのキレート剤でキレートをつくることによって軟水とすることができる。硬水はせっけんで沈殿を生じ、その働きを妨げるし、ボイラーなどでは加熱によって缶石を生じるなどするため、生活用水や工業用水として適当ではない。

硬度

水の硬さの程度を硬度といい、カルシウムおよびマグネシウムの含有量によって表す。すなわち、水中に存在するカルシウムとマグネシウムの総量を、それに相当する炭酸カルシウムの量に換算したときの1000ミリリットル中のミリグラム数を硬度とする。これをアメリカ硬度（単位ppm）といい、日本ではこれが広く使われている。また水100ミリリットル中に酸化カルシウムとして1ミリグラムを含むときドイツ硬度1度（単位dH）とし、マグネシウムは1.4MgO＝1.0CaOによって酸化カルシウムに換算する。通常20度以上のものを硬水、10度以下のものを軟水、その中間を中間の水という。炭酸水素イオンの濃度に対応する硬度を一次硬度あるいは炭酸塩硬度、その他の強酸の塩基に対応する硬度を永久硬度あるいは非炭酸塩硬度という。
