A branch of crystallography that studies the optical phenomena of crystals (which exhibit significant optical anisotropy, such as birefringence and pleochroism). The foundations were established experimentally in the early 19th century by D. Brewster (1781-1868) of England, and theoretically by Fresnel of France. In the second half of the 19th century, observation techniques advanced with the use of polarizing microscopes, and this contributed to the development of knowledge about crystal symmetry.
