However, it was later discovered that the Rh factors corresponding to human Rh antibodies and those in the serum of monkey-immunized rabbits are different, although they have similar specificities, and the Rh factor shared with monkeys came to be called the LW antigen. In the 1940s and 1950s, there was a groundbreaking advance in antibody testing methods, and new blood types were discovered one after another, but many of these were discovered by chance, such as during blood transfusions or tests for pregnancy. ...

...On the other hand, it is known that administering high titers of specific antibodies to a living body suppresses subsequent antibody production (this phenomenon is called immunological paralysis. For details, see the section on immunological tolerance). In fact, if a mother with Rh incompatibility is administered high titers of Rh antibodies at the time of her first delivery, Rh antibodies are not produced, making it possible to prevent miscarriage and other conditions caused by Rh incompatibility.
