Exchange interaction -

This is a spin-related interaction that occurs when the orbits of two electrons overlap each other. If the spins of the two electrons are s ₁ and s ₂ , respectively, then

-2 J ( s ₁ s ₂ )
where J is called the exchange integral. The exchange interaction between two magnetic atoms (or ions) is expressed as follows, where the spins of the atoms (ions) are S ₁ and S ₂ , respectively:

-2 J ( S ₁・S ₂ )
The value of J , of course, depends on the atom (ion) and can be positive or negative. The same type of exchange interaction also exists when a non-magnetic atom exists between two magnetic atoms (ions), and in this case it is called a superexchange interaction. In magnetic materials, these interactions result in ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism.

として与えられ，Jは交換積分といわれる．磁気的な2原子(あるいはイオン)間の交換相互作用は，原子(イオン)のスピンをそれぞれ S₁，S₂ とすると

－2 J(S₁・S₂)
である．Jの値はもちろん原子(イオン)によって異なり，正あるいは負になる．二つの磁気的原子(イオン)の間に非磁気的原子が存在するときも，同じ形の交換相互作用が存在し，このときは超交換相互作用という．磁性体ではこれらの相互作用により，強磁性や反強磁性が出現する．
