Guangxuehui (English: Guangxuehui; Kuanghsüeh-hui)

Japanese: 広学会 - こうがくかい（英語表記）Guang-xue-hui; Kuang-hsüeh-hui

The Society for the Diffusion of Christian and General Knowledge among the Chinese was founded in Shanghai in 1887 by British people living in China. Its chairman was the Commissioner of Taxation R. Hart. Its main members were T. Richard (Li Timota) and YJ Allen (Lin Lezhi). In addition to its journal, the International Gazette, it published various books to introduce information about Western Europe and promote reformist ideas, and had a great influence on Kang Youwei and Sun Yat-sen. However, its activities were essentially for the benefit of Britain itself, as evidenced by Richard's proposal to appoint half of the cabinet members from abroad in his proposal for reforming the Chinese government.

中国在住イギリス人を中心に，光緒 13 (1887) 年，上海に設立されたキリスト教啓蒙団体"The Society for the Diffusion of Christian and General Knowledge among the Chinese"のこと。会長は総税務司の R.ハート。 T.リチャード (李提摩太) ，Y.J.アレン (林楽知) らがおもな会員。機関誌『万国公報』のほか，種々の書籍を刊行して西欧事情の紹介，改良思想の普及に努め，康有為や孫文にも大きな影響を与えた。しかし，リチャードの中国政府改革案でも，閣僚の半数を外人から任命することを提案するなど，その事業は基本的にはイギリス本国の利益のためのものであった。
