A city in eastern Moldova. It is located about 70 km east-southeast of the capital, Chisinau, in a rich agricultural area on the left bank of the Donestor River. It was founded in 1995 near a fortress built in 1792. From 1924 to 1940, it was the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Moldova. The main industrial production is food, producing canned fruit and vegetables, wine, brandy, etc., and there are also factories producing motors, electrical appliances, furniture, etc. There is a pedagogical university, and a railway line runs between Odessa (Ukraine) and Chisinau. モルドバ東部の都市。首都キシニョフの東南東約 70km,ドネストル川左岸の豊かな農業地帯に位置する。 1792年築かれた要塞の近くに,95年に建設された。 1924~40年には,モルダビア自治共和国の首都であった。工業生産は食品工業が中心で,果実・野菜缶詰,ワイン,ブランデーなどを製造し,ほかにモータ,電気器具,家具などの工場がある。教育大学があり,オデッサ (ウクライナ) とキシニョフを結ぶ鉄道が通る。人口 18万 6000 (1991推計) 。
