Japanese: ゴイサギ(五位鷺) - ゴイサギ

A bird of the heron family. Wingspan 29cm. Green-black from the top of the head to the back, grey wings, and two or three long white feathers prominently on the upper part of the neck. Young birds have a row of light yellowish brown markings on a brown background on the back, and are commonly known as Hoshigoi (star five-ranked). Widely distributed in southern Eurasia, Africa, southern North America, South America, etc. In Japan, they breed in various places south of Honshu, and some migrate south in winter. They live in groups with other herons in lowland and low mountain forests, and nest in pine and cedar forests. They are nocturnal, feeding on fish and crayfish. Their squawking can often be heard at night. The name comes from the story that Emperor Daigo bestowed the bird with the rank of fifth rank.

サギ科の鳥。翼長29cm。頭頂から背まで緑黒色，翼は灰色，頸の上部に２，３本の白色の長い飾羽が目立つ。幼鳥は背面褐色地に淡黄褐色の斑紋が並び，星五位と俗称。ユーラシア大陸南部，アフリカ，北米南部，南米等に広く分布。日本では本州以南各地で繁殖し，冬季に一部は南方へ渡る。低地および低山の林に他のサギ類とともに集団ですみ，松林や杉林に営巣。夜行性で魚やザリガニなどを食べる。夜間クワッと鳴く声をよく聞く。名は醍醐天皇がこの鳥に五位を授けたという故事による。
