Sansei Eguchi

Japanese: 江口三省 - えぐちさんせい
Sansei Eguchi

A Meiji-era politician and freedom and civil rights activist. Born in Tosa (Kochi Prefecture). He first studied at Risshigakusha, an educational institution established by Itagaki Taisuke and others, and then moved to Tokyo to study languages, politics, economics, and other subjects, and became a leading figure in the left wing of the Liberal Party. During the Daido Danchi Movement, he was involved in the Osaka Club's newspaper, Shinonome Shimbun (first published in January 1888), and worked on the newspaper Jiyu (a newspaper of the Constitutional Liberal Party renamed Jiyu Shimbun by Itagaki and others) that was first published in April 1891 (Meiji 24). He ran in the second general election of 1892 from Kochi Prefecture under the name Komatsu Sansei and was elected, and was also elected in the third and fourth general elections. However, he rebelled against the party's compromise with power, and moved to Sapporo in 1900 (Meiji 33), where he died. He also wrote and translated many books, and his translation of Henry George's Social Questions (1892) in particular had an influence on party policies.
