An ancient city in central Syria, 16 km northeast of Homs, east of the Orontes River, now Al-Masharafa. Excavated by a French expedition in 1927-29. Traces of habitation date back to prehistoric times, and the city developed in the first half of the 2nd millennium BC. A temple dedicated to the Sumerian goddess Nin-egal was discovered here, as well as cylinder seals from the Third Dynasty of Ur and a sphinx made by Ita, the daughter of Egyptian Pharaoh Amenemhet II.
