Kakusuke - Kakujo

Japanese: 覚助 - かくじょ
Kakusuke - Kakujo
Year of death: 1.10 of the Shoryaku era (1077)
Year of birth: Unknown. A Buddhist sculptor from the mid-Heian period. Said to be the son or disciple of Jocho. A successor to Jocho, he opened the Shichijo Buddhist Temple. His name first appears in records in 1059 during the reconstruction of the Amida Hall and Godaido Hall of Hosho-ji Temple, and in 1059, after the burning of Kofuku-ji Temple, he was involved in the construction of the Shaka Triad in the Golden Hall and the Nio statues at the Nandaimon Gate, and in 1060, the construction of the Tahoto Pagoda at Byodo-in Temple. In 1067, he was conferred the title of Hokkyo for the sculpture at Kofuku-ji Temple, and in 1070, he and Chosei were promoted to the rank of Hogan for the sculpture at Ensoji Temple. He died midway through the construction of the Golden Hall of Kyoto's Hosho-ji Temple, and the sculpture of Buddha was taken over by Insuke. Anecdotes about Kakusuke's outstanding carving skills are recorded in the Kojidan, and in recent years, the Yakushi Nyorai statue at Kyoto's Dairen-ji Temple (created in 1070) is believed to be his work. <References> Ito Shiro, "On the Yakushi Nyorai standing statue at Kankei-ji Temple, the former home of Gion-sha: A study of the Kakusuke and Chosei eras" (Kokuka no. 1132) Asai Kazuharu Kakujo (15 January 1522 - 25 January 1574) A Tendai Buddhist monk from the Warring States period. Son of Emperor Gonara. In 1537, he succeeded Jiun as head priest of Manshuin. In 1570, he became the head priest of Tendai, but the following year he suffered the misfortune of the entire temple being burned down when Oda Nobunaga burned down Enryaku-ji Temple. There are differing theories about the year of his death.

Sakusuke

Year of death: 11 November 1063 (12 December 3, 1063)
Year of birth: Chowa 2 (1013)
A Tendai Buddhist monk in the mid-Heian period. He lived in Kao-in, Onjo-ji Temple. He was born in Kyoto. His father was Fujiwara Michimasa. He studied esoteric Buddhism under Gyoen and Shinyo. In 1055 (Tenki 3), he performed the Godan-ho ritual and offered prayers to Dainagon Tsunenaga's (believed to have the surname Minamoto) wife (believed to be Fujiwara Yorimichi's daughter, but there is no definite proof) to recover from an illness, and this was successful. As a result, he gained the good graces of Yorimichi and was appointed as a gon-ritsu priest. In 1062 (Kōhei 5), he was appointed as the head priest of Shitenno-ji Temple, but died the following year. There is an anecdote that when he prayed as there was little water in his room, a cold spring gushed forth, and people named the pond Hosenbo. <References> Soko Bonin, Mangenshi Bansen, Honchō Koso-den
