A small city in Katowice Voivodeship in southern Poland, near the border with the Czech Republic. Population 65,000 (1995). Located upstream on the Odra River, a passage to the Czech Republic, and close to the Moravian Gate, which passes through the narrow area between the Sudetes and Beskid Mountains into Moravia, it developed as a key route between north and south Europe. The town's origins date back to the 9th century, and there are many old buildings within the city, such as markets, churches and fortresses, as well as food processing (sugar and flour), leather and brewing industries (wine and beer).
