In the case of secondhand bookstores in Europe and the US, it is difficult to grasp the number of secondhand bookstores in each country because there are no prefectural associations or national organizations like in Japan. The number of member stores of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers was about 2,400 as of 1977, of which 324 were in the United States, 279 in France, 246 in the United Kingdom, and 174 in Germany. Japan has also joined in 1964 and has 26 member stores. According to the Bookdealers in North America 1980-82, the total number of secondhand bookstores in the United States was 2,191, and by state, New York had 420, California 338, Massachusetts 174, Pennsylvania 110, and Illinois 108.
