After studying under Adolf Hölzel (1853-1934) in his native Stuttgart, he was invited to the Bauhaus in 1920, where he was initially in charge of stone carving and mural painting. In 1923, he created murals for the school, and in the same year he directed the stage workshop, putting on productions such as Three Ballets.
