〘Noun〙① Sea and mountain. Also, the state of being like that. A lot. A lot. ※Santai Shi Genunsho (1527) "What a feeling of hatred towards these seas and mountains ."④ In the Osaka region, this refers to the New Year's multi-tiered boxed lunches. The ones filled with fish dishes are called "sea" and those filled with vegetarian dishes such as vegetables and fruits are called "mountains." Also, the characters written on the chopstick paper used for the multi-tiered lunches. Originally, these were written separately as "sea" and "mountain", but they came to be written together after the Meiji period.

Kaizan [sea mountain]

〘Noun〙① Sea and mountain. ※Sanyo Shisho (1833) 3/Tannoura-go "Dreaming of Diaochan and the sea, I see only the blue sea and the blue mountains, and the divine capital ."② A landform with a circular or elliptical base that stands alone at a height of more than 1000 meters above the ocean floor. Many are thought to be underwater volcanoes made of basalt. Those below 1000 meters are called sea knolls.

〘名〙① 海と山。海や山。※万葉(8C後)四・六八九「海山(うみやま)も隔たらなくに何しかも目言(めこと)をだにもここだともしき」② 海のように深く、山のように高いこと。恩恵や慕う気持などが深いことのたとえ。※海人刈藻物語(1271頃)四「まことに御おんうみ山まで」③ (形動) (②から転じて) 物事の程度のはなはだしいこと。また、そのさま。たくさん。たいそう。※三体詩幻雲抄(1527)「此に怨が海山(ウミヤマ)ななんどと云心ぞ」④ 大阪地方で、正月の重詰めをいう。魚類の料理を詰めたものを「海」とし、野菜、くだものなどの精進料理を詰めたものを「山」とした。また、その重詰めに使用する箸紙に書く文字。これももともと「海」「山」と別々であったが、明治以降合わせ書くようになった。※滑稽本・街能噂(1835)三「正月の重詰に海山といふことがあるぢゃア厶(ござ)りやせんか」

かい‐ざん【海山】

〘名〙① 海と山。※山陽詩鈔(1833)三・壇浦行「鍪貂蝉両一夢、唯見海山蒼蒼連神京」② 大洋の底から一〇〇〇メートル以上の高さで孤立してそびえる底面が円形または楕円形の地形。多くは玄武岩質の海底火山と考えられる。一〇〇〇メートル以下のものを海丘という。
