A Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea, about 10 km from the Turkish mainland. The highest point is 968 m above sea level. It has a Mediterranean climate and produces olives, grapes, tobacco, and sponges. Marble and magnesia are mined here. Sardine fishing is also popular. An ancient Ionian colony, it prospered as a commercial center in the 7th and 6th centuries BC. It was part of Turkey from 1462 to 1912. It is said to have been the birthplace of the female poet Sappho, and homosexuality was thriving there, and the word lesbian originated from here. The main city is Mytilene. ^{2,154 km2} . 109,118 people (2001).
