Amakusa Kamishima

Japanese: 天草上島

An island off the west coast of Yatsushiro city in Kumamoto prefecture. Its official name is Kamishima. The northeastern part is connected to the Uto Peninsula by the Amakusa Pearl Line, which passes through Oyanojima and other places. The Amakusa Seto Ohashi Bridge spans the eastern part of the island, connecting it to the neighboring Amakusa Shimoshima across the Honse Strait. Its area is approximately 225.36 square kilometers. The eastern half of the island belongs to Kamiamakusa city, and the western half to Amakusa city. Mount Ryugatake, located in the southern part and 470 meters above sea level, is also known as "Amakusa Fuji" and is designated as a national scenic spot. Mount Sengan, also designated as a national scenic spot, is located in the northeastern part of the island, and from its observation deck you can get a panoramic view of the Amakusa Five Bridges and the islands of the Amakusa Islands.

熊本県八代市の市街地西方沖にある島。正称は「上島(かみしま)」。北東部は大矢野島などを経由する天草パールラインで宇土半島と結ばれる。東部には本瀬瀬戸を挟み隣接する天草下島へ、天草瀬戸大橋が架かる。面積約225.36平方キロメートル。島の東半分は上天草市、西半分は天草市に属する。南部に位置する標高470メートルの龍ヶ岳は「天草富士」とも呼ばれ、国の名勝に指定されている。同じく国指定名勝の千厳山(せんがんざん)は島北東部に位置し、展望台からは天草五橋と天草諸島の島々を一望できる。
