Also known as natural color film. Color was already used in Edison's Kinetoscope. It started with a color-mixing method in which the screen was artificially colored frame by frame, and in the early 20th century, various additive color projection methods were used. Full-scale color films appeared after 1918, when Technicolor developed a subtractive color camera and printing method. In 1933, they improved the two-color method to a three-color method, improving color reproduction, and produced masterpieces such as Gone with the Wind (1939). Meanwhile, the color film method, which was developed almost simultaneously in the United States and Germany in the 1930s, made great strides after World War II, and Eastman Color in the United States, Agfacolor in Germany, and Fujicolor in Japan, among others, began to be used for movies, and came into practical use in the mid-1950s. Nowadays, negatives are generally shot with color film, and then printed onto positives for screening.

天然色映画とも。すでにエジソンのキネトスコープでも色彩が用いられていた。最初は画面を１コマずつ人工的に彩色する型置法に始まり，20世紀初めには加法混色映写法による各種の方法が行われた。本格的な色彩映画の出現はテクニカラー社が減色法の撮影機とプリント方式を開発した1918年以降のことで，1933年に２色法から３色法に改良して色の再現力を高め，《風と共に去りぬ》（1939年）その他の名作を出している。一方，1930年代に米国とドイツでほとんど同時に開発された発色フィルム法は，第２次大戦後，飛躍的な進歩をみせ，米国のイーストマンカラー，ドイツのアグファカラー，日本のフジカラー等が映画用に供せられるようになり，1950年代中葉から実用化されるに至った。現在は，一般に発色フィルムでネガ撮影し，上映用のポジに焼き付けている。
