weicher Stil (English spelling) weicherStil

…Most of these artists are unknown, but one of the most well-known is Meister der heiligen Veronika, painter of Saint Veronica, who was active in the early 15th century. Although there are not many surviving works by this artist, named after his painting Saint Veronica with the Shroud, his style, which makes use of flowing, graceful curves, is representative of the soft style, which could be called the German version of the so-called international Gothic style of the time, and his warm humanity and pious religiosity are also characteristic of the Cologne School. His successor, Lochner, was from Lake Constance, but probably settled in Cologne around 1430 and became a representative painter of the Cologne School. …

From [International Gothic Style]

Other representative artists from various regions include the painter of the Třeboň Altarpiece (date of birth and death unknown) in Bohemia, the painter of St. Veronica (date of birth and death unknown) in Cologne, Konrad von Soest (c. 1370-c. 1425) in Dortmund, and Meister Franke (c. 1425) in Hamburg. The graceful forms seen in the sweet Madonna and Child panel paintings and small sculptures produced in Bohemia during this period are often called the "Weicher Style". In Italy, this style is reflected not only in Lombardy but also in the works of Gentile da Fabriano, L. Monaco, Masolino, Sassetta, and others who were active in Tuscany.

After that, through the Weicher Style, which appeared around 1400, with its sweet Madonna and Child, German sculpture reached a peak at the end of the Middle Ages, with such masters as Nicolaus Gerhaert van Leyden (c. 1420-73), Stoos, Peter Vischer the Elder (c. 1460-1529), Bernt Notke (c. 1440-1509), and Riemenschneider. As architecture expanded windows and developed stained glass (Elisabeth Church in Marburg, Cologne Cathedral), murals decreased in proportion, and instead panel painting became the leading genre of painting, replacing the miniature. …
