It refers to music that is more popular and mainstream than so-called classical music (art music). Originally a translation of the English term "light music," it has been used since the 1930s as a convenient general term for jazz, chanson, tango, etc., but since World War II, the terms "popular music" and "pops" have come to be used more frequently. The English term "light music" has a narrower definition than the Japanese term "light music," and refers to classical music that is popular, or popular arrangements of such music.
