A family of French astronomers. Four generations in a row served as director of the Paris Observatory. The first director, Giovanni Domenico C. or Jean Dominique C. (1625-1712), was born in Italy and studied at a Jesuit school before being invited to work as an astrologer at a nobleman's observatory in Bologna. In 1656, he became a professor of astronomy at the University of Bologna and also served as an astronomy advisor to the Papal Court. He observed comets, the Sun, planets, and other objects with a telescope, revealing new facts about the rotational period and the movements of Jupiter's moons.
