One method of treating cavities is to grind down the tooth, including the carious area, create a cavity of an appropriate shape, and then technically fabricate a solid restoration that fits the cavity and fit it into place, then cement it in place. This type of restoration is called an inlay, and depending on the material, it can be divided into metal inlays, porcelain inlays, resin inlays, etc. The method of repairing hard tissue defects in teeth using an inlay is called an inlay restoration or inlay filling.

虫歯の治療方法の一つに，う蝕部を含めて歯を削り，適当な形に窩洞をつくって，それに適合する形態の固形修復物を技工的に作製してはめこみ，セメントで固着させる方法がある。この修復物をインレーといい，材料によりメタルインレー，陶材インレー，レジンインレーなどに分けられる。インレーによって歯の硬組織欠損を修復する方法を，インレー修復あるいはインレー充填という。
