Mikami Otokichi - Mikami Otokichi

Japanese:
Mikami Otokichi - Mikami Otokichi

Novelist. Born in Saitama Prefecture. In middle school, he was baptized by naturalism, wrote letters to the magazine Bunsho Sekai, and aspired to become a writer. After dropping out of the English department at Waseda University, he self-published the full-length novel Under the Spring Light in 1915 (Taisho 4), but it was banned for touching on the Korean independence movement. This work led to his acquaintance with Ikuta Chosuke, editor-in-chief of the Kodan Magazine, who serialized the full-length contemporary novel Akuma no Koi (The Devil's Love) (1916) in the magazine, which was very well received. In 1924, he serialized his breakthrough novel White Demon in the Jiji Shimpo, and this contemporary novel established his position as a popular writer, and also opened up a unique realm in period pieces with Katakiuchi Nichigetsu Soshi (1939). His period novels include "Yukinojo Henge" (1934-35), "Yodo-gi-mi" (1927), and "Kiyokawa Hachiro" (1929). He lived with the female writer Hasegawa Shigure and helped her found the women's literary magazine "Women's Art."
