The Story of Luoyang Temple

Japanese:
The Story of Luoyang Temple

Written by Yang Yanzhi of the Eastern Wei Dynasty in China. Five volumes. The Northern Wei capital of Luoyang had 1,367 temples, reflecting the prosperity of Buddhism at the time, but after the wars and relocation of the capital at the end of the Northern Wei Dynasty, it fell into ruin, and by the time the author revisited Luoyang in the 5th year of Wuding (547) during the Eastern Wei Dynasty, the number had dropped sharply to 421. Lamenting the state of ruin, this book records the status, history, and hearsay of the major temples in Luoyang, in the order of inside the city, east, south, west, and north. It is a valuable document that conveys the politics, culture, and customs of the time, and the travelogue of Song Yun's trip to India to collect Buddhist scriptures (Song Yun's Travel Journal) at the end of the book is highly valuable as a source of information on the Western Regions. Studies on this book include Zhou Zumo's A Critical Commentary on the Records of the Luoyang Monasteries (1958) and Fan Xiangyong's Annotated Records of the Luoyang Monasteries (ibid.).
