A deciduous shrub of the Ericaceae family. It is widely distributed in the cool temperate zone and high mountains of the Northern Hemisphere, and in Japan it grows wild in Hokkaido and high mountains north of central Honshu. It reaches a height of about 1m, produces many twigs and grows dense leaves. The leaves are small and obovate, with white undersides. In summer, it produces several flowers at the ends of the branches. The corolla is pale pinkish-white, urn-shaped, with five shallow lobes at the end, and contains 10 stamens and one pistil. The fruit is a spherical berry 6-7mm in diameter, turning blackish purple when ripe. The fruit can be eaten raw or used to make jam and fruit wine. It is called Asama grapes near Mount Asama.
