...The upper three are Yamashina-za in Yamashina, Nagahama City, Shimosaka-za, and Hiei-za near Sakamoto, Otsu City, and in the Shingi section of the Fushikaden, these three are referred to as the "Three Oshu Hiyoshi Oshinji Souzui-Sengakuza." On the other hand, the lower three are Mimaji-za in Taga-cho, Inukami-gun, Omori-za in Gamo-cho, Gamo-gun, and Sakaudo-za in Minakuchi-cho, Koga-gun, but the relationship between these lower three and Hiyoshi Shrine is unclear. With the exception of Hiei-za, which is close to Hiyoshi Shrine, both Yamashina and Shimosaka are located in the northern part of the lake east, while the lower three are located in the southern part of the lake east, so the distinction between upper and lower seems to be derived from the location of the seat (the term "Upper Three" is not used in documents, but there is no doubt that it was called that)....

…上三座とは，長浜市山階の山階座，下坂座，大津市坂本近辺の比叡座の3座で，《風姿花伝》神儀編ではこの3座を〈江州日吉御神事相随申楽三座〉としている。一方，下三座とは，犬上郡多賀町の敏満寺（みまじ）座，蒲生郡蒲生町の大森座，甲賀郡水口町の酒人（さかうど）座であるが，この下三座と日吉社との関係は不明である。上三座は日吉社に近い比叡座は別として，山階，下坂の両座はいずれも湖東の北部に位置しており，下三座はそれに対して湖東の南部に位置しているから，上下の別は座の所在地に由来するもののようである(上三座の呼称は文献の上に用例をみないが，そう呼ばれていたことは疑いない)。…
