An atoll in the Line Islands in the central Pacific Ocean. 364 km2 . Named after J. Cook's arrival on Christmas Eve in 1777. Became a British colony in 1888. In 1919, it was incorporated into the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony. It was used as a nuclear testing site by the UK from 1956 to 1958, and by the US from 1962 to 1963.
