Haiku poet. His real name was Nobukazu. He was born in Kakigaracho, Nihonbashi Ward, Tokyo (now Ningyocho, Nihonbashi, Chuo Ward). Kawabata Ryushi was his half-brother, 12 years older than him. After graduating from Dokukyo Junior High School, he attended Fujishima Takeji's painting institute, and later studied under Kishida Ryusei. In 1915 (Taisho 4), his work was selected for publication in Hototogisu magazine for the first time, and in 1924 he was featured on the front page of the miscellaneous poems column. During this time, he pursued a life of spiritual seeking, becoming a non-village member of Mushanokoji Saneatsu's "New Village" and living at Shogakuan, a subtemple of Tofukuji Temple in Kyoto. From 1931 onwards, he was bedridden at his home in Omori, Ota Ward, for about ten years due to spinal caries. The state of haiku of the author, described as "Bosha's Pure Land," can be seen in the poem "A single drop of dew on a stone on Kongo" from "Kawabata Bosha's Anthology of Haiku" (1934, Tamamosha), or from Takahama Kyoshi's words "The essence of bird-and-flower poetry is the pinnacle of his talent," written in the preface to his second collection of haiku, "Kegon."
