The holy book of Zoroastrianism. Written in Avestan, it consists of five parts: (1) Yasna (ritual book). It has 72 chapters in total, 17 of which are called "Gasas" and are attributed to Zoroaster himself. (2) Bisprad (minor ritual book). A supplement to the Yasna. (3) Bīdevdāt (exorcism book). (4) Yasht (doxology). (5) Khorda Avesta (prayers). The Avesta is said to have been compiled in 21 volumes during the Sassanid period, but only about a quarter of it has survived. The commentary in medieval Persian is called Zend (Zand).

ゾロアスター教の聖典。その言語をアベスター語といい，以下の５部からなる。（１）ヤスナ（祭儀書）。全72章，うち17章を〈ガーサー〉と称し，ゾロアスター自身の作に帰される。（２）ビスプラト（小祭儀書）。ヤスナの補遺。（３）ビーデーブダート（除魔書）。（４）ヤシュト（頌神書）。（５）ホルダ・アベスター（祈祷文集）。ササン朝期に全21巻のアベスターが編纂されたといわれるが，伝存するのはその約４分の１。なお，中世ペルシア語による注釈をゼンド（ザンド）という。
