The mountains between Shimizu Pass and Mikuni Pass, such as Takeno-dake (1,760m), Shigekura-dake (1,978m), Ichinokura-dake (1,974m) on the north side, and Mantaro-yama (1,954m), Sennokura-yama (2,026m), and Taira-piyo-yama (1,984m) on the west side, are collectively called the Tanigawa mountain range. The asymmetrical nature of the mountain ridges around Tanigawa-dake is remarkable. The western and northern slopes on the Niigata side, which form the source of the Uono River, are relatively gentle, while the eastern slope carved by a tributary of the Yubiso River on the Gunma side and the southern slope, which forms the source of the Tanigawa River, are steep rock walls. ...

…清水峠(1448m)からほぼ南にのびてきた上越国境をなす稜線が，直角に向きを変えて西に転ずる場所に位置する。北側にある武能（ぶのう）岳(1760m)，茂倉（しげくら）岳(1978m)，一ノ倉岳(1974m)，西側にある万太郎山(1954m)，仙ノ倉山(2026m)，平標（たいらつぴよう）山(1984m)など，清水峠と三国峠との間にある山々を含めて谷川連峰と総称する。谷川岳周辺は山稜の非対称性が顕著で，魚野川の源流部をなす新潟県側の西および北斜面が比較的ゆるやかなのに比べ，群馬県側の湯檜曾（ゆびそ）川の支流が刻む東斜面や，谷川の源流部をなす南斜面には急な岩壁が続いている。…
