Year of death: August 26, 1608 (October 4, 1608) Year of birth: Tenbun 12 (1543) A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Son of Sugihara Sadatsugu. Older brother of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's wife Nene (Kita no Mandokoro, later Kodaiin). Commonly known as Magobei and Higo no Kami. His ancestors were local lords of Harima Province with the surname Taira, who are said to have moved to Asahi Village in Owari Province during the Muromachi period. Iesada also initially inherited the Sugihara family, but later changed his surname to Kinoshita. Through his younger sister Nene's connections, he became a direct vassal of Hideyoshi, and in September 1587, he was awarded 11,341 koku in Harima, and was subsequently appointed Junior Fifth Rank, Higo no Kami, and given the Hashiba clan and Toyotomi surname. He was further promoted to Junior Third Rank and Chunagon. In August 1595, his stipend was increased to 25,000 koku, and he became the lord of Himeji Castle and was also appointed caretaker of Osaka Castle. During the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, he escaped danger because he was assigned to guard Kodaiin, and in the same year, Tokugawa Ieyasu transferred him to the two counties of Kayo and Kamiboso in Bitchu Province with a fief of 25,000 koku, and made him lord of Ashimori Castle. In July of the 9th year of the same year, he was promoted to the second rank and Hoin, and took the name Joei, and he died in Kyoto in the 13th year of the same year. His estates were temporarily confiscated and entrusted to Asano Nagaakira, but after the Summer Siege of Osaka in 1615, his second son Toshifusa was allowed to inherit the 25,000 koku lordship of Ashimori Castle. His eldest son, Katsutoshi, had his 62,000 koku stipend from Obama in Wakasa confiscated after the Battle of Sekigahara and became a ronin, but he was famous as a poet named Nagashoshi. His third son, Nobutoshi, became lord of Hiji Domain in Bungo, and his fifth son, Hideaki, was adopted into the Kobayakawa family. <References> "Fukugen" (Additional Notes on the Genealogy of the Taira Family Sugihara Clan) (Kenichi Niki) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
