1833‐91 Brazilian soldier and educator, an important figure in the establishment of the Brazilian Republic. Born in Rio de Janeiro as the son of an elementary school teacher, he entered the Brazilian Military Academy in 1853 and showed great talent in mathematics. He served as an assistant astronomer at the Rio Observatory, and as a mathematics instructor at the academy, he instilled Comte's positivism in his students, and nurtured republican officers who opposed slavery. He served as a technical officer in the Paraguayan War (1865-70), but returned home due to malaria, and founded and ran an institution for blind children in Rio (today's Benjamin Constant Institute).
