Brazilian soldier and educator, an important figure in the establishment of the Brazilian Republic. Born in Rio de Janeiro as the son of an elementary school teacher, he entered the Brazilian Military Academy in 1853 and showed great talent in mathematics. He served as an assistant astronomer at the Rio Observatory, and as a mathematics instructor at the academy, he instilled Comte's positivism in his students, and nurtured republican officers who opposed slavery. He served as a technical officer in the Paraguayan War (1865-70), but returned home due to malaria, and founded and ran an institution for blind children in Rio (today's Benjamin Constant Institute).

ブラジルの軍人，教育者で，共和政樹立の重要人物。小学校教員の子としてリオ･デ･ジャネイロに生まれ，1853年陸軍士官学校に入学して数学に優れた才能を発揮した。リオ天文台の天文助手を務め，士官学校では数学の教官としてコントの実証主義を生徒に吹き込み，奴隷制に反対する共和主義的な将校を育てた。技術将校としてパラグアイ戦争(1865‐70)に参加したがマラリアのため帰還し，失明児施設(今日のベンジャミン･コンスタン協会)をリオに創設，経営した。
