Blessed with excellent pioneers, Islamic studies made a great leap forward in the 20th century, and Nöldecke's History of the Qur'an was thoroughly expanded and revised (3 volumes, 1909-38), and research was carried out on foreign vocabulary, variant texts, the determination of relative and absolute dates of chapters and verses, the precise meaning of terms, the influence of Judaism and Christianity, etc. Regarding the biography of Muhammad, Frants Buhl's (1850-1932) Biography of Muhammad (1903, German edition 1930), which determined most of the details including chronology, was followed by W M Watt's two-part work (1953, 56), characterized by sociological analysis, and T. Andrae's Muhammad (1930), which was written from the perspective of religious psychology. Von Kramer's study of intellectual history was followed by individual studies of theology, philosophy, and political thought. In particular, the study of Islamic mysticism by R. Nicholson and Massignon shed light on an aspect of Islam that could not be known through the study of theology or law.
