It is the capital of Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran. It is located 130 km north of Abadan, in the low sandstone hills overlooking the Qarun River. It is built on almost the same site as the ruins of an old city that once flourished. After the end of the 19th century, a new residential area, Bandar-e Nasser, built in a grid pattern, developed on the left bank, where steamships anchor. A new city with administrative offices and a central railway station developed on the right bank, and factories, shops, and housing for refinery workers were built in the northern part of the old city. It is the junction of two branches of the Iranian Railway, and is connected by road to Kuninshahr (Khorramshahr), Abadan, and the oil fields in the south, and by air to the capital, Tehran. The city's industrialization was promoted by the Khuzestan Development Plan. Population: 724,653 (1991).
