Literature written on the theme of blacks and mulattoes in areas of the Americas with large populations. The Black Belt of the United States is also included in this area, but since literature dealing with black issues in that region of North America is generally referred to as black literature, it would be better to exclude it from the category of Afro-American literature. Therefore, it would be appropriate to consider it a general term for literature that is primarily aimed at black and mulatto-people living in the Caribbean and northeastern Brazil.
