A fossil human of the latest human stage. Excavated in 1901 from the Grimaldi site in Italy, facing the Mediterranean Sea near the French border. Numerous Cro-Magnon bones were discovered in four caves at the site, along with Late Paleolithic tools, and two bones with different morphology from Cro-Magnon bones were excavated from one of them, the Grotte des Enfants (Cave of Children). These belonged to a young male and an adult female, and both had a strong prognathism, a wide nose and face, and a significantly long head, so they were said to resemble today's black people and were called Negroid or Grimaldi races. At the time, there was interest in the fact that such a human species had coexisted with Cro-Magnons on the European continent, but today it is believed to have been a misidentification caused by a mistake in assembling the skull fragments.
