The world's largest gas field was discovered in 1971 in the Arabian Gulf, Qatar, 80 km northeast of the northern tip of the Qatar Peninsula in the Middle East. Its ultimate recoverable reserves are estimated at about 10 trillion m3, the same as the Urengoy gas field, said to be the largest in the world. It has a vast dome structure covering an area of about 6,000 km2, and the part of the gas field that juts out into Iran in the north is called the South Pars gas field. The gas layer is the Khuff Formation of carbonate rocks from the Late Permian Period, and is about 2,500 m deep. The Middle East, along with Western Siberia, is one of the world's largest natural gas reserves, and the Khuff Formation in particular has been explored in recent years as a promising geological layer in the Middle East, and many oil and gas fields have been discovered in Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi.

中東カタル半島北端の北東80km沖合のカタル領アラビア湾で1971年に発見された世界最大のガス田。究極可採埋蔵量は世界最大といわれるウレンゴイ･ガス田と同じ約10兆m3と推定される。面積約6000km2の広大なドーム構造で，ガス田北部のイラン領への張出し部分は南パースSouth Parsガス田と称されている。ガス層は二畳紀後期の炭酸塩岩のクフKhuff層で，深度は2500m前後である。中東地域は西シベリア地域とともに世界最大級の天然ガス埋蔵地域で，とくにクフ層は中東地域における有望な地層として近年探鉱され，サウジアラビアやアブ･ダビーでは多くの油ガス田が発見されている。
