Born June 24, 1895 in Manassa, Colorado
[Died] May 31, 1983. New York, New York, USA. Born William Harrison Dempsey. He entered the boxing world in 1914, and won many knockouts between 1918 and early 1919. In 1919, he challenged Jess Willard, the world heavyweight champion, and knocked him down seven times in the first round to win the title by knockout. He held the world heavyweight title for seven years until he was defeated by Gene Tunney in 1926. In the return match against Tunney the following year, in 1927, he knocked Willard down in the seventh round, but forgot to go to the neutral corner and was warned by the referee. The missed count during this time gave Tunney the victory. This match became famous as the "Long Count Incident." Known for his agile movements and powerful punches, he was called the "Hero of the Fist," and built the golden age of American boxing in the 1920s. His career record was 62 wins (51 KOs) out of 84 matches. In later years he became a successful restaurateur in New York.
