Japanese: ゴイアニア(英語表記)Goiânia
Goiânia (English spelling)
The capital of Goiás state in central Brazil. It is located about 170 km southwest of the capital Brasilia, at an altitude of about 760 m on the central plateau. In 1933, the current location, about 110 km southeast of the old state capital Goiás, was selected as the new state capital, and the state government moved there in 1937, but it was not officially established as the state capital until 1942. It is a modern planned city with wide streets and beautiful parks. It is home to the Federal University of Goiás (1960) and the Catholic University of Goiás (59), and is strongly characterized as a political and academic city, but as the center of the surrounding agricultural and livestock areas, it is also a thriving center for coffee, beef cattle, and other products. There is a nickel mine nearby. It is connected to Brasilia, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and other areas by rail and road. Population: 920,838 (estimated 1991).
