Haiku poet. Born in Aichi Prefecture. Real name Kenji. Graduated from the law department of Tokyo Imperial University and joined the Ministry of Communications, retiring as vice minister in 1937 (Showa 12). While serving as director of the Fukuoka Exchange Savings Bureau in 1918 (Taisho 7), he composed haiku with Yoshioka Zenjido and others, and after returning to Tokyo, he studied under Takahama Kyoshi and established the Tokyo University Haiku Society. He became famous as the author of "Hototogisu" for his light and elegant style of composition. In 1928, he founded and presided over the publication of "Wakaba", and after retiring from the government, he devoted himself to haiku. For his work, he received the Japan Art Academy Prize in 1971 (Showa 46), and was recommended as a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1975. He was revered as a master of the haiku world along with Mizuhara Shuoushi, and as he grew older, he added more and more lustre to the world of haiku. Since "Kusa no Hana" (1933), he has written nearly 20 collections of haiku, including "Shorai" (1940), "Bansu" (1955), "Koki Harukaze" (1957), "Kiju Iono" (1965), and "Yowai Toshi" (1978), as well as many essays.
