A Swedish transport manufacturer. Headquartered in Gothenburg. The vehicles it produces are known for their safety and the strength of their bodies, making them suitable for driving on snowy and icy roads. Founded in 1915 as a steel manufacturer. In 1926, it became a subsidiary of bearing manufacturer AB SKF, and adopted its current name. It began producing automobiles in 1927, and separated from SKF in 1935. It then diversified its business, and expanded overseas in the 1970s. In 1979, it spun off its passenger car division. In 1981, it acquired the Beijerinvest Group, and AB Volvo became a holding company. It operates a wide range of businesses, including construction machinery, aircraft engines, and energy. Since selling its passenger car division to the US-based Ford Motor Company in January 1999, the company has focused its automotive business on the truck division. It holds 17% of the world's market share for trucks weighing 16 tons or more. In 2007, it acquired Nissan Diesel Industries Co., Ltd. through a tender offer for its shares. Sales for the fiscal year ending December 2011: 310.4 billion kroner.

スウェーデンの輸送機メーカー。本社イェーテボリ。生産する自動車は氷雪地の道路走行に適する安全性と車体の強さで知られる。1915年鉄鋼メーカーとして創業。1926年ベアリング・メーカーのAB SKFの子会社となり，社名を現名に。1927年より自動車生産をはじめ，1935年SKFから分離独立。その後事業を多角化，1970年代以降海外進出。1979年乗用車部門を独立。1981年Beijerinvestグループを買収，AB Volvoは持株会社となる。建設機械，航空機用エンジン，エネルギーなど幅広く事業を展開。1999年１月，乗用車部門を米国のフォード・モーター社に売却以降，自動車事業はトラック部門に専念。16トン以上の重量トラックでは世界の17％のシェアを占める。2007年株式の公開買い付けによって日産ディーゼル工業を子会社化した。2011年12月期売上高3104億クローネ。
