? ‐313 Roman Emperor. Reigned 305-310 (co-emperor) and 310-313 (regnal emperor). Nephew of Galerius, he was appointed co-emperor. He ruled Syria, Palestine, and Egypt. He inherited a policy of persecuting Christians, executed many believers, and forced them to work in mines. He worked to revive the Roman religion, organized a priesthood, and provided religious education. Persecution led to conflict with Western emperors, and after being defeated by the invasion of Licinius, he issued an edict of tolerance towards Christianity before his death.
