This building was built as an exhibition hall for the first Great Exhibition, held in Hyde Park, London in 1851. It is also called the Crystal Palace. It was designed by landscape architect J. Paxton. It is a prefabricated building made of standard-sized cast iron and glass, planned to build a large exhibition hall quickly and cheaply on a wooded site. It is 1,847 feet (about 560 m) long, 408 feet (about 120 m) wide, and 103 feet (about 30 m) high. Paxton derived this style from a greenhouse.
