The highest peak in the Vanoise massif in the French Alps. It is 3,852 meters above sea level. It was first climbed in 1860 by W. Matthews and three others. It is located almost 50 km south of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the French Alps, and geologically it is located in the Tertiary Alpine fold belt. The summit of the Vanoise massif is over 3,500 meters high and is covered by numerous glaciers. The area above 1,200 meters above sea level was designated the first national park in France (1963), and is famous as a natural conservation area for flora and fauna.
