Grande Casse (mountain)

Japanese: グランド･カス[山]（英語表記）Grande Casse

The highest peak in the Vanoise massif in the French Alps. It is 3,852 meters above sea level. It was first climbed in 1860 by W. Matthews and three others. It is located almost 50 km south of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the French Alps, and geologically it is located in the Tertiary Alpine fold belt. The summit of the Vanoise massif is over 3,500 meters high and is covered by numerous glaciers. The area above 1,200 meters above sea level was designated the first national park in France (1963), and is famous as a natural conservation area for flora and fauna.

フランス･アルプス，バノアーズ山塊の最高峰。標高3852m。1860年W.マシューズら3人によって初登頂された。フランス･アルプスの最高峰モン･ブランのほぼ真南50kmにあり，地質構造的には第三紀のアルプス褶曲帯に位置する。バノアーズ山塊の山頂部は3500mを超え，数多くの氷河におおわれている。標高1200m以上の地域は，フランスで最初の国立公園に指定され(1963)，動植物の自然保護地域として有名。
