A political party active from the end of the 19th century seeking self-government for Ireland. It was also called the Irish Parliamentary Party or the Home Rule Party. Its predecessor was the Home Rule Union, founded in 1873 by Isaac Butt (1813-79). After Butt's death, under Parnell's leadership, the party sent many members to the Westminster Parliament in London (85 seats in 1885) and played a major role in supporting Gladstone and promoting Home Rule. It weakened after Parnell's fall from grace (1890), but was revived under the leadership of John Redmond (1856-1918), and supported Asquith and worked hard to pass the Third Home Rule Act in 1914.
